Informed Decision Making

For many cities and counties, the only time scrutiny is placed on functional areas of government for performance is once a year at budget time. Some may review statistics quarterly. Fewer still look at results on a monthly basis. The result is that, whether from year-to-year, quarter-to-quarter or month-to-month, valuable and crucial opportunities for improvement are wasted in the interim. Traditionally, leaders have based important operational and fiscal decisions on data that is several months old-- too late to question practices, adjust initiatives, or avoid budget overruns. The Stat process allows policy to be made and carried out simultaneously. The results of corrective action can be noticed over the space of weeks, not months or years.

"In order to change the outcomes produced by government, you have to change what government does. CitiStat changes what government does, by measuring what it produces and creating a mechanism to make timely changes."
